MAH JONGG AT THE KALAHARI TOURNAMENT RULES

ANY PLAYER NOT SEATED WHEN THE SESSION BEGINS WILL INCUR A 20 POINT PENALTY. CELL PHONES MUST BE SILENCED, ABSOLUTELY NO TEXTING.
  1. The EAST player will begin each round by rolling the dice and breaking the wall according to the number thrown on the dice.

  2. Each player will be responsible for their scorecard. At the end of each hand North and South will verify and initial each other’s score and West and East will do the same.  Cards without verification will not be accepted.   At the end of each session each player will be responsible for turning in their scorecard.

  3. Charleston rules are as follows: the first Charleston is compulsory; a player has the option to stop the Charleston after the first left, if all players agree, the second Charleston continues; a player may steal at the first left and last right point in the Charleston (if you steal you MAY NOT PEAK at the tile, if you do you will incur a penalty of 10 points) the passing will end with an optional Courtesy Pass of one, two or three tiles.

  4. Play will begin when the player with the 14th tile discards.  Play will proceed in a Pick and Throw manner. Any player may call last discarded tile for Mah Jongg or exposure. Once the next player has racked their next tile or thrown a tile the previous tile is dead.  YOU MAY NOT CALL IN ANY TILE ONCE IT IS DEAD.

  5. You will score each hand according to the scoring on current National Mah Jongg League Standard Hands and Rules card. When a player picks their own Mah Jongg tile they will receive double the points listed on the card.

  6. If a player declares Mah Jongg and they have made the hand without any Jokers they will receive double points for the hand.  This rule does not apply to the “Singles and Pairs” section of the card.

  7. In the event of a Wall game (when no players has declared Mah Jongg before the last tile is thrown) each player will receive 10 points.  Each round must consist of 4 completed hands. If the last hand is not completed within the allotted time each player will receive a Zero for that hand.   If a player has a DEAD hand and there is a wall game the dead player does not receive the 10 points.  Any player may call another player dead at anytime, but if this is done in error, the player that called the dead  player is the one with the dead hand.

  8. At the end of each round all players will rotate and begin the next round.

  9. A player who throws winning tile to player who has no exposures on rack will incur a 10 point penalty; if there is one exposure on rack there will be a 15 point penalty.

  10. A player who throws winning tile to player who has two or more exposures on rack will incur a 20 point penalty.

  11. When Mah Jongg is declared the hand must be displayed as it appears on the card

  12. Do not discard your hand until the Mah Jongg has been verified.  If a player exposes a hand in error the play will continue between the players that have their hand intact.  If there is only one player with their hand intact they will get 10 points, while the others will get zero.

  13. If there is a dispute one player at the table will raise their hand and  the Director will come over and rule on the dispute and that ruling will be final.
